The automatic welding system has four main advantages: improved welding quality, increased production, and reduced scrap.
Welding quality includes two factors: weld integrity and repeatability. The automatic welding system ensures welding integrity through the electronic welding process controller. Combining mechanized welding torch and part movements with electronic recall of welding parameters enables higher quality welding to be performed manually. This provides instant quality control. In addition, since welding is performed only once, defects are easily found. Humans tend to "smooth" a mistake with a welding torch, hiding hidden or possibly defective welds. In some cases, leak testing and vision systems can be integrated into a fully automated system to provide additional quality control.
